Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr. – Audition Central

Musical Audition Instructions

Who can Audition? Youth grades K – 12!

Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr. is based on the full length Broadway stage play. The adaptation allows youth groups to produce the play for the experience of Disney magic and for the fulfillment of young dreams to play certain characters.

As in any musical, there are always primary character parts, secondary or group parts, and ensemble parts in Disney musicals. The idea being that the larger the cast, the more fun and better camaraderie and experiences for all involved.

Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr. is a musical; therefore, everyone in the cast either sings, dances, or plays a character part. Character parts have dialog to be spoken and/or sung.

**** The audition times are divided over 2 days – Dec. 2 from 2:00 – 4:00pm; Dec. 3 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Those wishing to audition are not required to come to both; pick the one that is best for your schedule. Also, those auditioning can come at any time during the time-frames given, but the earlier the better as we try to do script readings also. *****

Those who wish to try-out for a primary character part are required to prepare for it and then audition for it by singing an audition song. Solo vocal parts are many and are within songs – the Ensemble is involved throughout the play.

You may audition for up to 3 character parts. We assume that by registering to be in the cast of Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr., you will participate at least as a member of the Ensemble. If you are not interested in auditioning for a specific part, you will still be considered for a part in the play, so do not worry.

As always, those who audition and accept a role in the play will be committed to perform in all six shows and attend rehearsals for that role.

In Disney’s Mary Poppins Jr., the primary characters would include: Mary Poppins, Bert, Mr. and Mrs. Banks, Jane and Michael Banks, Mrs. Brill, and houseboy Robertson Ay.

Ensemble members may play multiple parts depending on the scene and time for costume changes. Ensemble groups and featured roles include: Katie Nanna, animated statues, Bird Woman, Honeybees, Chimney Sweeps, and kite flyers.

A few words about being in the Ensemble – the Ensemble are included in most of the songs. The Ensemble also provides support on stage through dance, cast extras, and spectators to all of the action. These roles are a good way to introduce new participants to theater.

We have provided excerpts of the songs we will audition. Perfection is not a requirement, we will hopefully get you there through rehearsals. We are looking to see how you audition a song – voice volume, presentation, and feeling for the lyrics.
